How to Control High Blood Pressure

How to Control High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) is not a condition to take lightly. You can take steps to control high blood pressure through a healthy diet, exercise, and several other steps listed below.

Things You'll Need:

Doctor

Determination

1

Get advice and help from your doctor or health care provider. This is the most important step if you have high blood pressure. Hypertension requires the supervision of a qualified health care provider.

2

Know your blood pressure. It's important to be aware of how high (or low) your blood pressure actually is. Make sure to have it checked regularly.

3

Exercise regularly. Consistent exercise can help control your blood pressure. You should try for at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week. If that seems impossible, try three days a week and move up from there.

4

Follow the 'DASH' diet (see link in the resources below). This diet consists of whole grains, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and is low in fat and sodium.

5

Limit your alcohol intake; this helps control high blood pressure.

6

If you smoke cigarettes, take steps to quit. Smoking is a big factor in high blood pressure, so talk to your doctor about techniques for quitting.

7

If you are on high blood pressure medication, be sure to always take it as directed!

Tips & Warnings

Don't be discouraged if your blood pressure doesn't change right off. Give yourself time; you should see results eventually.

Follow any tips only under the advice of your health care provider.

How to Control Heavy Periods With Herbs

How to Control Heavy Periods With Herbs

If you suffer from a heavy menstrual period (or menorrhagia), then you know the drill. Tired of your situation, you visit the doctor who then puts you on birth control to manage it. Some doctors may even suggest getting a hysterectomy to fix it.

However, there are natural options too. The birth control option attempts to address the fact that your hormones are out of whack. However, as an herbalist, I believe that it is better in the long run to encourage your body in a gentle way to fix the imbalance. To do this I recommend using two types of herbs: one that is good for the liver and another that is good for the endocrine system, as well as making the following lifestyle changes.

Things You'll Need:

One herb from each category

Seaweed of choice

Multivitamin with iron

A healthy diet

1

Select one herb from each category.
Liver:
• Burdock root
• Dandelion root
• Pau d'arco
• Yellow dock

Endocrine System:
• Wild yam root
• Licorice root
• Vitex
• Ginger root
• Dong quai

Take each herb once or twice a day in capsule form or as a tea. It's easier to take them as a capsule, however. Continue taking it as long as needed.

2

Women who suffer from heavy menstruation are often dealing with mineral deficiency. Seaweed is rich in minerals and vitamins and is also good for the endocrine system. You can choose any form of seaweed that you like. My personal favorite is nori, the seaweed used for sushi.

3

Another problem women have when they experience heavy periods is a lack of iron. Taking a natural multivitamin with iron is a good way to help keep iron levels at normal. Another good way is to also eat foods that are rich in iron such as green beans, small amounts of meat (hormone free) and spinach.

4

Eating a healthy diet is also important. This includes whole grains, hormone-free protein sources and plenty of leafy green vegetables.

Tips & Warnings

If you want more advice about herbal remedies for heavy menstrual periods, consult with a doctor.

Even if you decide not to go on birth control or get a hysterectomy you should still see a doctor to rule out anything serious as the cause.

Don't take licorice root if you have high blood pressure.

Don't use dong quai while menstruating.

How to Control Hay Fever

How to Control Hay Fever

Millions of people around the world suffer from hay fever. There are many over-the-counter medications to try, but here are some options available that you may not know about.

1

Visit your physician and get a complete check up. You will probably be sent to an allergist for specialized testing. The good thing about that is you will know exactly what you are allergic to.

2

Raise your immunities. Eliminate sugars and processed foods from your diet. Try adding a multivitamin and mineral complex to compensate for anything you might be missing in your diet.

3

I tried the following remedy for 6 months and it got me completely off of all the allergy shots and over the counter medicines I was taking. I started the program early in the spring and went most of the way through the harvest season. I stopped the allergy shots during the summer and had a minimal number of allergy attacks.

1st week: 2 astragalus capsules (1 morning and 1 evening)
2nd week: 100 mg - 200 mg of Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B1) a day
3rd week: 2 echinacea w/goldenseal capsules (1 morning and 1 evening)
4th week: 100 mg - 200 mg of Pantothenic Acid a day

Repeat the schedule for 6 to 8 months. Remember that everyone is different and you will have to adjust the dosages to your own specific needs.

4

Vitamin C reduces histamine levels in the blood. Lowered histamine levels reduce allergic reactions. Vitamin C is also a known immune system enhancer.

5

For fast relief, try over-the-counter medicines. Choose one that only remedies the symptoms you are experiencing. OTC meds usually work within 20 to 30 minutes. They will remedy the symptoms, but do nothing to eliminate the cause.

6

Keep a small notepad handy. Document the things or places that cause an allergy attack. Write down the symptoms, the duration and what helps to alleviate the discomfort.

Tips & Warnings

Always read labels on all medications.

When you take herbal remedies, find out what works for you. Some people will need more, some will need less. Everyone is different.

Always consult a physician before starting any remedy or alternative healthcare program.

How to Control Constipation With Herbs

How to Control Constipation With Herbs

Almost nothing makes us feel more miserable than being constipated. Whether it’s a chronic problem or even if it only happens to you once in a while, it’s something you want to avoid. Eating foods that are low in fiber, as well as overeating and eating foods that are too well done can cause infrequent or difficult bowel movements. Fresh fruits and vegetables, eaten raw or lightly steamed or sautéed, are the first line of defense when you begin to suffer from constipation. And the old standards, bran and prunes, are always good choices before you reach for the over-the-counter products that promise relief, but can become habit forming.

Things You'll Need:

Cascara sagrada bark

Yellow dock root

Burdock root

Licorice root

Psyllium seed

Water

Prune juice or prunes

Bran

1

Get up and do a little exercise. Simply walking 15 or 20 minutes several times each week can help to prevent constipation from happening and can help to get things moving in your intestines.

2

Evaluate your diet and add fresh fruits and vegetables if you’re not eating the recommended four to five servings every day. Prunes, or prune juice, of course, are wonderful to get the bowels moving.

3

Add bran, either wheat bran or oat bran, to your diet every day. It’s delicious in breads, muffins, and you can even sprinkle it on your breakfast cereal.

4

If you need a little boost to the above measures, try taking psyllium seed or husk, available in capsules, every day for seven days. Be sure to drink two glasses of water or herb tea after taking psyllium.

5

An effective formula for relieving constipation is a combination of cascara bark, licorice root, yellow dock and burdock. Simmer one teaspoon of each in two cups of water for about 20 minutes. Allow it to cool slightly, and then drink one-half cup every day. Before you retire in the evening is a good time to drink this tea. If taking this tea only once a day doesn’t help, increase your dosage to twice a day.

6

Stress can also cause constipation, so if you are going through a tough time, do some relaxation exercises, yoga and deep breathing.

Tips & Warnings

Visit your local farmer’s market and experiment with the freshest and most beautiful fruits and veggies you can find.

Avoid processed food and junk food.

Avoid eating a lot of foods that contain flour, as this can “plug you up.” Once or twice a week is fine, but many people find that a diet that is heavy in wheat can cause constipation or make it worse.

This article is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The use of herbal products should not be taken lightly. Always consult a qualified health care practitioner before using any herb, especially if you are pregnant or nursing or if you are taking any prescribed medications.

How to Control Arteriosclerosis With Natural Medicine

How to Control Arteriosclerosis With Natural Medicine

Arteriosclerosis, or the hardening of arteries, is a medical condition in which calcium, cholesterol and fat deposit on the arterial walls, decreasing blood flow and increasing blood pressure. Modern medical treatments include catherization and angioplasty or even removing the lining of the artery or replacing it entirely with a synthetic graft. The best approach to treating arteriosclerosis is by examining and removing the causes through a less invasive and natural treatment.

Natural Medical Treatments

1

Determine the cause of arterial blockage by conducting analysis tests with your natural medicine doctor. Doctors should perform a variety of tests including body fat percentage, EKG, blood biochemical risk factor analysis and a platelet aggregation test. From these tests, a natural medicine doctor can prescribe the right natural treatment for you, and help you eliminate other prescription drugs that may be worsening the problem.

2

Treat arteriosclerosis with Chelation therapy if your risk factors for serious complications are high. Chelation therapy corrects the cause of artery blockage by trapping and removing harmful substances in the blood, such as aluminum, lead and mercury. Chelation therapy is a natural non-surgical treatment that is less invasive, less damaging and more effective that traditional medical treatments.

3

Have your natural medicine doctor perform a FACT (Functional Acuity Contrast Test). This simple test can help your doctor determine whether IV injections of phosphatidylcholine and glutathione can be an effective treatment for your arteriosclerosis. Phosphatidylcholine and glutathione can reverse the build-up of plaque and lesson the tendency for thick blood, easing the symptoms and causes of arteriosclerosis.

Natural Treatment at Home

1

Remove stressors that may cause or worsen arteriosclerosis. Avoid all free radicals by removing excess fat from your diet, eating more natural foods with no preservatives, not smoking and taking fewer prescription medications if possible. Your naturopathic doctor should help you determine if your healing response is inadequate due to or aggravated by excessive medication, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, excess blood sugar or other stressors.

2

Change your lifestyle depending on the advice your natural medicine doctor recommends after in depth testing. These changes will most likely include a strict diet that restricts fat and carbohydrate intake and increases exercise to reduce weight. Other treatments may include hormone therapy, vitamin and mineral supplements and stress reduction.

3

Add fresh garlic to your diet whenever possible; there is no such thing as too much. Garlic has the natural ability to reduce the clotting tendency of blood, reducing the stickiness and aggregation of platelets in the arteries. A diet rich in garlic can help to reduce high blood pressure, relieving the symptoms of arteriosclerosis.

4

Spice your foods with cayenne pepper, fenugreek and caraway. High cholesterol levels in the blood increases the tendency for plaque formation; however, cholesterol is influenced by the type and level of lipoproteins in the blood. High-density lipoproteins can prevent plaque accumulation and help control arteriosclerosis. Vegetable lipids, or phytosterols, are a means of introducing more high-density lipoproteins and can be found in cayenne pepper, fenugreek, caraway, garlic and onions.

Tips & Warnings

Early detection and control of arteriosclerosis can save your life. If you suffer from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, see a natural medical doctor as soon as possible to assess your risk and discuss possible treatment and prevention options.

How to control anxiety with herbs

How to control anxiety with herbs

TCM, or traditional Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years, and recently has gained popularity in the united states. the days of western elitism are gone as more and more of their "primitive" remedies have been scientifically proven to have merit. Major drug companies have spent billions of dollars researching these "new" organic compounds that the Chinese have been employing in their medicines for centuries. The following mixture is a traditional Chinese preparation of two herbs that i have found to have real therapeutic benefits. They are potent anti-anxieties but unlike synthetic western medications, do not have a risk of dependency or abuse.

Things You'll Need:

valerian root (1 oz) overlain (1 oz) hot water a tea ball

1

Make sure that both of the herbs are completely dry -if they aren't, the tea that they produce will not be potent enough. Also, dice them up into small pieces that will fit into the tea ball.

2

Pack the tea ball completely full with a mixture that is two part valerian root and one part vervain. Boil three pint of water add the tea ball and remove from heat. Cover the pot or teapot and allow the tea to steep for at least twenty minutes and up to one hour.

3

after the tea is properly steeped one small cup at breakfast or lunch, and a larger cup (the rest of the preparation) at bedtime. If you experience any stomach discomfort try adjusting the amount of tea that you imbibe to four small cups per day, before each meal and once at bed time.

Tips & Warnings

Warnings: make sure that all of the tea has been removed before drinking. Vervain has an extremely bitter taste. If you are taking any medications, consult with a physician before using drinking the tea.

How to Know the Best Way to Lose Weight With Herbs

How to Know the Best Way to Lose Weight With Herbs

Weight loss can be tricky. The formula is pretty simple: Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and don't consume too many calories. But what happens if you've been doing these things but are not getting the results you expect? Herbs can help out a lot.

Note: Depending on the herbs you choose they can help your body burn fat, boost your metabolism, and keep your liver healthy. The herbs listed below are not diet aids. They simply help strengthen the body's natural ability to lose weight. They are also not stimulating like some of the "diet herbs" on the market.

If you are looking for a guide to help you detox, this is NOT it. If you want something that will help you lose weight quickly, again, you will not find that info in this article.

Too many people try to find the quick way out. They spend years abusing their bodies and eating food that is bad for them. They neglect their bodies and continue to not exercise. Instead, they want to undo years of abuse by taking a supplement that will crash the weight off. This is just MORE abuse.

You will NEVER find that kind of information in an article that I write. This is not a healthy mindset and I will never advocate those methods. My goal is to help you get healthy. Period.

So if you read the steps below and feel disappointed that I'm telling you to take herbs that will gently get your body back in balance and will help aid you in a normal, healthy weight loss schedule - perhaps it's time for a change of mentality? If you want to lose weight it is NOT an overnight process.

My advice would be to really think about your habits and your lifestyle. Make the changes that you need and then choose one or two of the herbs listed below that will gently help your body be as healthy as possible. This WILL translate to weight loss.

3

Traditional tea is also a good weight loss aid. White tea and green tea are the best, but black tea and oolong tea will work as well. They come from the sample plant, they're just dried differently.

Some herbs really help fire up your metabolism, which helps you burn more calories. These herbs include ginger, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon.

How to Keep Colon Clean Naturally

How to Keep Colon Clean Naturally

If you're feeling tired, sluggish, sick to your stomach or constipated then you may have an impacted colon. There are several ways you can clean your colon naturally and obtain relief from these symptoms. A colon cleansing by a physician can be harsh and costly. Follow these steps and learn how to keep your colon clean naturally. Read on to learn more.

1

Begin a fast. You cannot clean out your colon if you keep adding more pollutants to it. During a fast the body detoxifies by digesting the impure materials and creating new cells.

2

Drink plenty of water. This can restore the function of the colon to a great extent. It is also necessary in the processing of fiber.

3

Take in at least 30 grams of fiber. This can be done with fiber supplements dissolved in water. The fiber initiates natural colon cleansing.

4

Purchase colon cleansing herbs from your local drugstore. Some herbs such as senna, fennel, garlic, cascara sagrada and psyllium have natural properties to remove fecal matter from the lining of the colon.

5

Eat onions, garlic and bananas after your fast. These are natural probiotics that introduce friendly bacteria into your digestive tract and stimulate natural colon cleansing. You can also take probiotic supplements during your fast and afterwards if you don't eat adequate amounts of these foods.

6

Buy a colon cleansing home kit that has everything you need in one kit if you don't want to look for all these individual products. They're available on the Internet. Check out colon-cleansers.com.

How to Improve Health With Inversion Therapy

How to Improve Health With Inversion Therapy

Unless you live on the moon, you are probably familiar with the inevitable "shifts" that take place as you age. You can't escape it, but you can force gravity to work in the opposite direction. Inversion therapy has loads of health benefits. From relieving back pain to relieving depression--it's guaranteed to turn your world upside down.

Things You'll Need:

Inversion equipment

1

Choose a method. An inversion rack with gravity boots is an inexpensive option; however, this method is only for physically fit folks. Inversion tables make it easier to get into an inverted position. Some models are even motorized.

2

Begin conservatively. Only invert 15 to 20 degrees at first. You can experience all the benefits of inversion without fully inverting. Even the most experienced inverters find 20 to 60 degrees sufficient.

3

Remain inverted only as long as you are comfortable. Listen to your body. If something hurts, come up. Gradually work up to 15 to 20 minutes once or twice a day.

4

Come up slowly. Let your body readjust to an upright position before standing alone or walking.

5

Add a light exercise routine when you feel comfortable with your inversion schedule. Any movement--like rocking, rhythmic intermittent traction (pull and release) or stretching--helps circulation.

6

Invert regularly. As with any fitness regimen, inversion therapy requires a commitment to see results. Find a schedule that works for your body, and stick to it.

Tips & Warnings

Usually only serious athletes would benefit from a full 90-degree inversion. The risk of injury to a novice is not worth the risks involved in full inversion.

Pulled or strained back and neck muscles are common in beginning inverters. These injuries are often a result of overdoing it.

How to Improve Health Through Ayurveda

How to Improve Health Through Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient form of medicine which originated in India thousands of years ago. Today, in the United States, Ayurvedic medicine is considered to be a complementary and alternative form of medicine that is used in conjunction with conventional medicine. The practice of Ayurveda is thought to improve health by balancing the mind, body and spirit. Prepare to take an active role in improving your health with Ayurveda.

1

Find an Ayurvedic practitioner to assist you. If you do not want to use an Ayurvedic practitioner, then purchase the book, "Perfect Health: The Complete Mind/Body Guide," by Deepak Chopra.

2

Determine your psycho-physiologic body type, also known as your constitution or prakriti. Your constitution is the balance of three doshas: pitta, vata and kapha. One of these doshas is dominant.

3

Maintain healthy sleeping habits by going to sleep before 10 p.m. and awakening before 6 a.m.

4

Begin each day by drinking a warm glass of water with lemon juice. Then, give yourself a massage using warm oil. Massage up and down over your limbs, in a circular motion over your joints and in a clockwise motion over your abdomen. Incorporate some form of meditation into your morning routine.

5

Establish a sound exercise routine which incorporates Yoga. Exercise before 10 a.m. and avoid exercising at the middle of the day, when the sun is strongest, or close to bedtime. Slow your exercise when your forehead is sweating.

6

Eat your largest meal between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Have a smaller breakfast and smaller dinner. Be sure to incorporate all six tastes into each meal, including sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. Eat to balance the doshas.

Tips & Warnings

Stimulate your agni or digestive fire before eating. Place a little lemon juice and salt on a small piece of ginger. Eat the ginger before eating your meal. This wakes up your digestive system, preparing it to digest your meal.

Don't practice Ayurvedic medicine in conjunction with conventional medicine without informing your medical doctor.

Avoid drinking cold liquids. Instead drink liquids at room temperature.

Don't eat after 8 p.m. as this may allow toxins to accumulate in your system.

How to Pick a Bag for Spring

How to Pick a Bag for Spring

Spring fashion requires choosing the right bag to complete your outfit. Bags come in a variety of colors, sizes and purposes, making it possible to pick just the right one. Several different bags may be needed to meet the demands of travel, parties, shopping and other activities.

Step
1

Pick up a clutch for those special evenings at the opera or other elegant, springtime social events. A clutch is small and conveniently holds the essentials, such as keys and a lipstick for touch-ups after dinner.

Step
2

Select a satchel in spring colors to carry books or other bulky objects. Satchels are popular for students or ladies with hobbies that require them to travel.

Step
3

Travel in style during spring with a duffel bag in a light color. A duffel bag is made of thick fabric and is often used as luggage.

Step
4

Let a tote be the bag of choice for carrying items that don't fit in a purse. A tote can comfortably be used as a shopping bag again and again. Its two straps make for easy handling.

Step
5

Choose a messenger bag to carry books, snacks or extra clothing during your springtime bicycle rides. Messenger bags are used in much the same way as backpacks. The adjustable fit makes this type of bag comfortable for long rides.

Step
6

Pick a designer bag in spring colors. The kind of bag you carry says as much about your taste as the clothes you wear, and a pricey bag can instantly elevate a simple or inexpensive outfit.

Step
7

Buy a bag that fits your body style. Choose a

handbag

that is opposite your body type for the best appearance. For instance, a large bag works well for a tall, thin woman.

Step
8

Choose a convertible handbag for the most options in wear. A convertible design can be worn on the shoulder, on your arm or as a clutch.

Step
9

Fill a cigar box handbag with your necessary items. This small, box-shaped bag is hard and will protect any delicate items you may carry.

Tips & Warnings

Always try on a bag just as you would a dress. If the bag is too bulky or unbalanced for your body, keep looking. The bag should be easy to grasp or feel comfortable if you use a shoulder strap.

Keep in mind the purpose of the bag. If you plan to carry diapers, crackers and toys for your toddler, choose a bag with plenty of room.

Don't pay designer prices unless you're certain you are getting the real thing. A good fake can look like a designer bag right down to the fake logo.

Avoid trendy shapes that don't complement your body type.

How to Part With Maternity Clothes

How to Part With Maternity Clothes

Parting with maternity clothes can be challenging for women who've grown accustomed to being pregnant or for women who haven't lost the baby weight. If you aren't pregnant and you're still holding on to your maternity clothes, it's time to get rid of them.

Step
1

Lose weight. Once your maternity clothes are baggy on you, you'll have the confidence to move to some smaller clothes. You need to realize that maternity clothes are designed to look good on pregnant women and only on pregnant women.

Step
2

Decide that you're done having
children
for the time being. For some frugal mom's-to-be, holding on to maternity clothes is practical, especially if you're planning on getting pregnant in a year or two. If you don't plan to have any more children in the near future, you can part with your maternity clothes by realizing that you aren't going to wear them again.

Step
3

Make some of the money that you spend on maternity clothes back by selling them to a consignment shop. If you are having trouble parting with them, pack your maternity clothes in a box and let it sit for a few months. By the time you're ready to sell them, the season should be right and consignment shops will be in need of your clothes.

Step
4

Donate your gently used maternity clothes to a thrift store or to The Salvation Army. You can also contact a local church to find out if they have a benevolence program for pregnant women or if they know of a person in need. Homeless shelters may also benefit from your donations.

Step
5

Give them away to friends or family. Sometimes it is easier to part with your maternity clothes when you know the person who gets them will take care of them.

Step
6

Have them altered if you absolutely love your maternity clothes and you want to keep wearing them. You can do this yourself if you're talented with a sewing machine. If not, take them to a professional. Sometimes it can cost less to have clothes altered than to buy new clothes.

Tips & Warnings

You can also sell your maternity clothes on Craigslist or eBay.

How to Paint Jeans

How to Paint Jeans

Whether trying to cover up a stain or trying to enhance your current pair of denim blues, painting on jeans is a fairly inexpensive option. You don't need to be much of an artist to make the image come out clearly. All you need is a decent stencil and some supplies. Painting on your jeans is also a great way to update a hand-me-down or a thrift-store find. Read on to learn how to paint jeans.

Things You'll Need:

Jeans

Cardboard

Stencil

Tape

Palette (plastic plate, or styrofoam)

Fabric paints

Stencil brushes, various sizes

1

Find the pair of jeans you're ready to paint. Wash and dry them, especially if they're brand-new jeans you want to embellish or jeans that haven't been used in a while.

2

Iron the jeans and stretch them out on a table or other workspace. Make sure you protect your work surface from possible paint splatters. Cut out a piece of cardboard or other heavy paper so that it will slide down into your jeans. This should go directly underneath where you plan on painting because it will prevent paint from seeping through to the other side of your jeans.

3

Secure the stencil either by applying a self-sticking stencil or taping the edges down. Use the plates as your palette and squeeze out the various colors you plan to use. Keep a separate plate for mixing colors.

4

Dot the paint in even amounts throughout the stencil. Use different sized brushes as needed. Remember when using a stencil you don't make sweeping brush strokes; instead, use short, quick dabs. Never press too hard or scrunch up your bristles. Be patient and don't let the paint get gloppy.

Leave your jeans at least overnight to let the paint set. After the paint is completely dry, iron the image. Put a dishtowel or other cloth between the image and the iron.

6

Wash your jeans in cold water, you may wish to turn them inside out to protect the image you just painted. Let your jeans air dry unless you want your stencil to have a faded look. If you do, place them in the dryer.

Tips & Warnings

Make sure you use fabric paints. Acrylics can crack over time. You can also use fabric pens if you prefer.

Your local craft store should have everything you need to complete this project.

How to Paint a Pair of Crocs

How to Paint a Pair of Crocs

Although Croc-brand shoes come in a wide variety of styles and colors, you can add an element of personalization by painting and decorating them to your liking. Read the following steps for creative and new decorating ideas.

Things You'll Need:

Scouring pad

Alcohol-based inks or plastic specific paints

Applicator (felt pen, paintbrush)

Pair of Crocs (light colors work best)

Piece of chalk or china pencil

Step
1

Begin by gathering the best tools for your project. Choose a paint that won't crack, peel or fade when used on plastics. Alcohol paints and paints made specifically for plastics are best and adhere well to plastics. Alcohol paints can be found in the stamping aisle and dry quickly. You will also want to find an applicator that you feel confident working with, whether it be a felt based pen or an actual paintbrush.

Step
2

Use old newspaper to cover and protect your work area. Choose an area that is well ventilated to facilitate drying and to cut down on paint odors.

Step
3

Consider planning your project colors and patterns ahead of time. Map out your designs with a china pencil or piece of chalk.

Step
4

Paint away!

Step
5

Allow your Crocs to dry for 24 hours before wearing, especially if you are going to venture out in the rain or dew.

Tips & Warnings

Consider letting your creativity flow: add beads, feathers or writing.

If you make a mistake after the paint is dry, rub a scouring pad over the area. It will remove the paint without damaging your Croc's patina.

Neither tempura nor acrylic paint adhere well to Croc's surfaces.

How to Pack Light for a Weekend in New York

How to Pack Light for a Weekend in New York

Are you planning a trip to New York City and wondering what you will need? Since fashion is such an important part of the vibe in this fast-paced, trend-setting city, you will want to be sure you have all of the right items in your bag. That way no matter where you go, you can feel confident and ready to rub shoulders with the "in" crowd and know you can hold your own.

Things You'll Need:

Wide leg black pants

Dark wash jeans

Black top

Navy top

Royal blue silk T

Gray blazer

Biker jacket

Boots

Wedge pumps

Step
1

Pack light when you head for the city. Just make sure you have some basic items that are appropriate for the season so you can mix and match to hit the right note wherever you go. Select fashionable basics, such as wide leg black pants, dark wash jeans, a black sleeveless blouse, a navy top, biker jacket, gray blazer and boots and pumps (or gladiator sandals during the summer months).

Step
2

Step out to dinner Friday night in dark-wash jeans with a navy blue top for a fresh combination. Add black pumps with a chunky necklace and a biker-inspired jacket to get a polished and slightly trendy look.

Step
3

Embrace Saturday in the big city wearing wide leg black pants with a silky black top. You can add a gray herringbone blazer or cardigan for day and black boots. Or, if the weather is warm, skip the outer layer and simply wear gladiator sandals and a silk scarf tied around your neck. Dress up the look for evening simply by swapping the blazer for a sequined cropped sweater.

Step
4

Usher in Sunday wearing jeans again. Pair them with some colored layered tank tops and throw a cardigan on over them if it's chilly out. Wear boots or the gladiator sandals and add some jewelry.

Tips & Warnings

Bring some unusual accessories with you. Patent leather or metallic finishes can add a fashionable touch to whatever you wear. Also long necklaces and bracelets can finish off your look.

Plan to visit the street vendors and flea markets to find a few key items you can add to your wardrobe and jewelry collection.

Avoid bringing too much with you. There is so much to do in New York City that you won't spend much time at your hotel changing clothes.

How to Pack Light for a Weekend in Boston

How to Pack Light for a Weekend in Boston

If you are planning a weekend to Boston, here's how to pack light for your visit. Take a few of your favorite clothing items with you and enjoy your trip to this sophisticated walking city.

Things You'll Need:

Black pants

Sweater

Short skirt

Jeans

Sleeveless blouse

Fitted jacket

Flats

Boots

Long shorts

Step
1

Bring the basics with you. You will need well-fitted black pants, a pair of designer jeans, a simple skirt or dress and a few tops. Add long shorts and leather flip flops if weather permits, then plan to mix and match these items in different ways so you will fit in with the residents.

Step
2

Look stylish for dinner out Friday night by wearing the black pants with high heels and a sleeveless silk blouse for dinner out. If the weather is cold, add a cashmere wrap.

Step
3

Shop all day Saturday in the designer jeans with a t-shirt and flats. Avoid the chill by slipping on an embellished cardigan or swap the jeans and shoes for long shorts and flip flops if it's warm out.

Step
4

Step up the look Saturday night by trading the shoes for equestrian boots. Wear the jeans with a tailored blouse and a shrunken blazer for a look that will work for a movie, dinner or a night club. Wrap an unusual scarf around your neck to add a European touch.

Step
5

Meet friends for Sunday brunch in a simple skirt and an A-line top or a fitted dress with a cropped sweater. Wear boots, flats or pumps, depending on whether you want to dress things down or up.

Tips & Warnings

Remember to pack tights and some well-chosen accessories, including a few necklaces, bangle bracelets, simple earrings and a basic purse that can work for day or night.

Allow enough room in your suitcase to bring home some special purchases. Boston has lots of great shops, particularly on Newbury Street and in Quincy Market.

Be sure to bring warm enough clothes. Certain areas of Boston can feel like a wind tunnel, so include a heavy coat and winter boots if you will be there during the winter. If you plan to travel there in spring or summer, at least pack a cardigan or light coat for cool evenings or restaurants that are heavily air conditioned.
